Comparison of Semen Quality in Simmental and Limousin Cattle at BIB Central Java

Artificial Insemination is used to improve the genetic quality of livestock, so that semen quality becomes a determining factor in the success of the program. This research aims to obtain information regarding the best semen quality in Simmental (dual-purpose cattle) and Limousin (beef cattle) bull. Research activities were carried out at the Central Java Artificial Insemination Center using 6 semen Simmental and 6 semen Limousin, which were collected 8 times in one month periode. Semen examination includes macroscopic evaluation including color, viscosity, volume and pH, while microscopic includes sperm motility and concentration. Semen testing starts from fresh semen, continues with liquid semen, to frozen semen. The results showed that the color, viscosity, volume, pH, sperm motility of fresh semen, liquid semen and frozen semen were not significantly different with a confidence value of >0,05, while the concentration of fresh semen showed a significant difference with a confidence value of <0,05. The semen quality of the two breeds of cattle did not show any significant differences, except for the fresh semen concentration parameter which was detected to be significantly different (P<0.05).
